Human Risk Solutions works on rail infrastructure engineering projects to integrate human factors effectively into the design of buildings systems and vehicles, including supporting the design process of a station, track and signalling infrastructure or rail vehicle. We also work with operators to provide assurance to that the design process is in-line with expectations and requirements and to advocate effectively for the organisation as part of the engagement with the design process. Human Risk Solutions has a proven track record in effectively integrating human factors into rail projects.

Human Risk Solutions worked with an industry body to develop and deliver a 6‑day human factors training course designed to upskill key roles in public hospitals such that they have a solid grasp of human factors concepts and approaches. Participants were required to complete a project to demonstrate practical application of human factors and were able to apply this knowledge into their daily roles.

Post-incident analysis: In order to better understand the human component of an incident, and to develop improvements that consider human and systemic factors Human Risk Solutions undertook a task and error analysis regarding emergency response activities at an on-shore facility following a loss of containment incident. Process included engagement with end-users and the application of error analysis techniques.

Assessing systems changes: In response to a possible rulebook change, we considered the impacts on operations associated with a change to a key safety rule. Through understanding impacts of the rule in the context of the overall system and the potential for error we were able to provide a structured consideration of potential issues and enablers to support a transition around this rule.

Human factors integration into rolling stock: Human Risk Solutions has worked with a rail operator to integrate human factors into the program of works for the introduction of two modern passenger trains. This has included providing input to design for the design of cab and saloon, and depot and train maintenance facility design and modifications. The works have also included supporting the risk processes, review of designs and providing assurance to the business that an appropriate HF integration process has been applied.

Human factors integration into infrastructure projects: Working closely with a rail operator over several years Human Risk Solutions has supported the projects division to provide oversight and assurance across a broad range of infrastructure projects. The human factors activities include supporting the risk processes, review of designs and input to the design process, and review of human factors outputs to provide assurance to the business that effective human factors integration is in place. Working closely with the client over 5 plus years has allowed us to develop excellent relationships with the operator to build an intimate knowledge of the projects, operations and client needs.
